The Great Holocaust of Kupp-Rahira (Manpur)

Nanakshahi: 27 Magh (9 February)

The Great Holocaust of Kupp-Rahira (1762) marks the most horrific day of martyrdom in Sikh history, when thousands of Sikhs, including women and children, were massacred by the Afghan forces of Ahmad Shah Abdali.

Historical Background

The Great Holocaust of Kupp-Rahira (Manpur) is a tragic and glorious episode in Sikh history that symbolizes the bravery, sacrifice, and steadfastness of the Sikh nation. This event occurred in 1762 CE, when, under the orders of Mughal rulers and the conspiracy of the Governor of Lahore, a widespread and ruthless operation was carried out against the Sikhs. In history, it is also referred to as the 'Chhota Ghallughara' (Minor Holocaust), which was a precursor to the greater Holocaust.

The Site of Kupp-Rahira

Kupp-Rahira, known today as Manpur, is located in the present-day Sangrur district of Punjab. At that time, this area was a dense forest and marshy land, where Sikhs had gathered to escape persecution. The site holds immense historical significance as the place where the Sikh community faced one of its darkest hours.

The Events of 1762

In February 1762, Ahmad Shah Abdali, the Afghan invader, launched a massive campaign against the Sikhs. The Sikhs, led by Sardar Jassa Singh Ahluwalia and other leaders, were moving towards the Malwa region. They were accompanied by thousands of non-combatants, including women, children, and elderly. On February 5, 1762, near the village of Kupp-Rahira (now Manpur), the Afghan forces attacked the Sikh caravan. The Sikhs fought valiantly, but they were heavily outnumbered and surrounded. The battle turned into a massacre. According to historical accounts, around 30,000 Sikhs were martyred, and thousands of women and children were taken captive. The sacred Guru Granth Sahib Ji was also desecrated. The Sikhs, however, fought with unmatched courage, and many attained martyrdom while defending their faith and families.

Aftermath and Significance

The Great Holocaust of Kupp-Rahira was a turning point in Sikh history. Despite the immense loss, the Sikh spirit remained unbroken. The event galvanized the Sikh community, leading to the formation of the Dal Khalsa and the eventual establishment of the Sikh Empire under Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji. The martyrdom at Kupp-Rahira is remembered annually by Sikhs around the world, especially at the site in Manpur, where a memorial stands in honor of the martyrs. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made for the preservation of Sikh faith and identity.
