Foundation Day of Shiromani Akali Dal

The Shiromani Akali Dal is one of the most significant institutions in Sikh history, founded to safeguard the religious, social, and political freedoms of the Sikh community. Its foundation day is observed annually by Sikh congregations with deep respect and reverence.

Historical Background

Sikhism, established by Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, gradually developed an organized structure over time. Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, by creating the Khalsa Panth, bestowed upon the Sikhs a distinct and sovereign identity. Following this, the Sikh community made countless sacrifices to protect their faith and freedom. The Shiromani Akali Dal was formally established on 14 December 1920, during the Gurdwara Reform Movement (also known as the Akali Movement). This movement aimed to liberate Sikh Gurdwaras from the control of corrupt Mahants (hereditary custodians) who had been appointed during the British era and were misusing shrine funds. The Akali Dal emerged as the political wing of the movement, while the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) was formed to manage the religious affairs of the Sikhs.

The Shiromani Akali Dal played a central role in the peaceful struggle for Gurdwara reform, which led to the passing of the Sikh Gurdwaras Act in 1925. This legislation granted Sikhs the legal right to manage their own places of worship through the SGPC.
