The Martyrdom Day of the Elder Sahibzadas commemorates the supreme sacrifice of Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, the elder sons of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj.

Historical Background

The Martyrdom Day of the Elder Sahibzadas, known as Shahidi Dihara Vade Sahibzade, is observed with deep reverence and devotion to honor the great sacrifice of Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, the elder sons of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. This sacred day falls on the 7th of Poh in the Sikh calendar and is commemorated annually by Sikhs worldwide.

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj, the tenth Sikh Guru, endured immense hardships and sacrificed everything for the protection of Dharma and the oppressed. His elder sons, Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, exemplified unparalleled courage and devotion from a young age. Baba Ajit Singh Ji was born in 1687 CE to Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj and Mata Sundari Ji. He received extensive training in martial arts, horsemanship, and Sikh scriptures, preparing him for the battles ahead.

Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, born in 1691 CE to Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj and Mata Jito Ji, also imbibed the spirit of valor and selfless service. Both Sahibzadas grew up in the tumultuous times of the late 17th century, when the Mughal Empire and the hill chiefs sought to suppress the Sikh faith. Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj established the Khalsa Panth in 1699, and his sons became embodiments of its ideals.

The historic Battle of Chamkaur took place on December 7, 1705 (22nd Poh), when Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj, along with his followers and family, was attacked by a massive Mughal army. After evacuating Anandpur Sahib, the Guru's party was surrounded at Chamkaur. In the ensuing battle, Baba Ajit Singh Ji, at the age of 18, sought permission to join the fight. He fearlessly charged into the battlefield, displaying extraordinary bravery and martyrdom. Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, merely 14 years old, also requested to fight and attained martyrdom shortly after. Their sacrifices inspired the Khalsa and remain a testament to unwavering faith.

The Martyrdom Day is observed with Akhand Paths, Kirtan, and lectures recounting the valor of the Sahibzadas. Sikhs gather at Gurdwaras, especially at Chamkaur Sahib, to pay homage. The day reminds Sikhs of the ultimate sacrifice for righteousness and the importance of standing against tyranny. It is a time for reflection on the teachings of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj and the enduring spirit of the Khalsa.

The martyrdom of the elder Sahibzadas, along with the younger Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri Ji, is collectively remembered as the sacrifices of the Sahibzadas, which hold a central place in Sikh history and identity. The event underscores the Sikh principle of Degh Tegh Fateh—service, courage, and victory—and continues to inspire generations to uphold truth and justice.
