ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਈ ਮਨੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਚਮਕਦਾ ਰਹੇਗਾ। ਉਹ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਲੂ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਿਭਾਈ। ਭਾਈ ਮਨੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀ ਸੌਂਪੀ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਮਹਾਨ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ, ਲਿਖਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਨ।

ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਪਿਛੋਕੜ

ਭਾਈ ਮਨੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਬੀੜ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਨਿਭਾਈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਲਈ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਮਰਪਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਜਦੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਗਲ ਸ਼ਾਸਕਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਵਧੇ, ਤਾਂ ਭਾਈ ਮਨੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ

ਭਾਈ ਮਨੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਲਈ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਤਸੀਹੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ, ਪਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਧਰਮ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਹਾਦਤ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਮ ਲਈ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਦਾ ਸਰੋਤ ਰਹੇਗੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਿਖਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਲਈ ਹਰ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਦੇਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਮਹੱਤਤਾ

ਭਾਈ ਮਨੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਦਿਹਾੜਾ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਦਿਨ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਈ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀਆਂ ਕਦੇ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ। ਭਾਈ ਮਨੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਹਾਦਤ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਹਿੰਮਤ, ਸਬਰ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਘਰ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਸਮਰਪਣ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੀਵਾਨ ਸਜਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਲੈਣ ਦਾ ਸੱਦਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Martyrdom Day of Bhai Mani Singh Ji

Bhai Mani Singh Ji holds a revered and luminous place in Sikh history. He was a devoted Sikh of Sri Guru Arjan Sahib Ji and continued to serve the Guru Ghar during the time of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Sri Guru Arjan Sahib Ji entrusted him with the responsibility of managing the seva (service) and affairs of Sri Harmandir Sahib. He was a great scholar, a gifted scribe, and a true Sikh of the Guru.

Historical Background

Bhai Mani Singh Ji played a pivotal role in the seva of preparing the bir (recension) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. He was deeply learned in Gurbani, Persian, and Sanskrit, and he devoted his life to the propagation of the Guru's message. Under the guidance of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, he served as a scribe and assisted in the compilation of the Dasam Granth. He also served as the head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib and was entrusted with the education of the Guru's children, including the Sahibzadas.

After the martyrdom of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Bhai Mani Singh Ji continued to lead the Sikh community with courage and wisdom. He was based in Amritsar and worked tirelessly to keep the spirit of the Khalsa alive during a period of intense persecution under the Mughal governor of Lahore, Zakariya Khan. He sought permission to hold the Diwali festival at Amritsar in 1738, hoping to gather the Sikhs for a peaceful assembly. The governor granted permission but imposed a heavy tax of ten thousand rupees, intending to trap the Sikhs and destroy them.

Bhai Mani Singh Ji realized the treacherous design and, to avoid the wholesale massacre of the Sikhs, he advised them not to come to Amritsar that year. Consequently, the promised revenue could not be collected. For this, he was arrested and taken to Lahore. He was offered the choice of embracing Islam or facing death. Bhai Mani Singh Ji refused to abandon his faith and accepted martyrdom with unwavering resolve.

Martyrdom

On the orders of Zakariya Khan, Bhai Mani Singh Ji was subjected to a brutal execution. He was dismembered limb by limb at Lahore in 1738. He endured the torture with extraordinary fortitude, reciting Gurbani and meditating on the Divine Name. His martyrdom became a source of inspiration for the Sikhs, symbolizing the supreme sacrifice for the sake of faith and the community's survival.

Bhai Mani Singh Ji's life and martyrdom exemplify the Sikh ideals of seva, sacrifice, and steadfast devotion. His contributions to the compilation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and his role in preserving the Sikh tradition are remembered with deep reverence. The Martyrdom Day of Bhai Mani Singh Ji is observed by Sikhs around the world with prayers, kirtan, and reflections on his unparalleled sacrifice.
