The Martyrdom Day of Baba Banda Singh Ji Bahadur commemorates the supreme sacrifice of the great Sikh military commander who led the Khalsa forces against Mughal tyranny and laid down his life for the faith in 1716.

Martyrdom Day of Baba Banda Singh Ji Bahadur

In Sikh history, the name of Baba Banda Singh Ji Bahadur is remembered with great pride and reverence. He was born in 1670 CE in the hill region of Rajouri (now in Jammu and Kashmir). His original name was Lachhman Dev. At Nanded, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Sahib administered Amrit to him and gave him the name 'Banda Singh Bahadur', sending him towards Punjab to confront oppression and injustice.

Historical Background

Leading the Sikh forces, Baba Banda Singh Ji Bahadur marched through Sarhind, Samana, Sadhaura, and other regions, challenging the tyrannical Mughal administration. He established the first Sikh rule in Punjab by liberating vast areas and abolishing the zamindari system, granting land to the tillers. His campaigns struck fear into the hearts of oppressive rulers and gave hope to the downtrodden. The Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah and later Farrukhsiyar launched massive military expeditions against him. After a prolonged siege at Gurdas Nangal, Baba Banda Singh Ji Bahadur was captured in December 1715 along with hundreds of Sikhs.

Martyrdom

Baba Banda Singh Ji Bahadur was brought to Delhi in chains. He was subjected to unspeakable tortures. His young son, Ajai Singh, was killed before his eyes. Baba Ji remained steadfast in his faith, refusing to embrace Islam or renounce the Khalsa. On 9 June 1716, he was executed at Qutub Minar, Delhi. His body was torn apart with red-hot pincers, and his flesh was fed to dogs, yet he did not waver. His martyrdom, along with that of thousands of Sikhs, became a defining moment in Sikh history, inspiring generations to stand firm against tyranny.

Legacy

The Martyrdom Day of Baba Banda Singh Ji Bahadur is observed with deep respect. Sikhs gather in Gurdwaras to remember his sacrifice, recite Gurbani, and reflect on his unwavering courage. His life teaches the values of selfless service, justice, and steadfastness in the face of oppression. The day reminds Sikhs of their duty to uphold righteousness and to protect the weak, following the example of Baba Banda Singh Ji Bahadur, who gave his all for the Khalsa Panth and humanity.
