The Foundation Day of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) commemorates the establishment of the central Sikh institution on 15 November 1920 at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Amritsar, to manage Sikh gurdwaras and religious affairs.

Historical Background

The establishment of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) under the shadow of Sri Akal Takht Sahib was a significant turning point in Sikh history. For centuries, the need for a central institution to serve and maintain the gurdwaras and to provide religious guidance to the Sikh community had been deeply felt. This need was fulfilled through the support of the Sikh congregations and the Gurdwara Reform Movement, which arose in opposition to the desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. On 15 November 1920, at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Amritsar, a representative assembly of Sikhs from various regions formally established the SGPC as the community's central body.

Formation and Early Role

The formation of the SGPC marked the beginning of a new era in Sikh institutional life. Its primary objectives included the proper management of historical gurdwaras, the propagation of Sikh teachings, and the protection of Sikh religious rights. The committee was tasked with ensuring that the sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was upheld and that the management of gurdwaras remained in the hands of the Sikh community. The SGPC also played a crucial role in the Akali movement, which sought to liberate gurdwaras from the control of hereditary custodians (mahants) who had often misused their authority.

Struggle and Recognition

In its early years, the SGPC faced considerable opposition from the British colonial government and vested interests. The peaceful protests and sacrifices of Sikh volunteers, known as Akalis, eventually led to the passage of the Sikh Gurdwaras Act in 1925. This legislation legally recognized the SGPC as the central authority for the management of Sikh gurdwaras in Punjab. The Act provided a framework for the election of the committee and defined its powers and responsibilities, thereby solidifying its role as the premier institution of the Sikh Panth.

Legacy and Significance

Since its inception, the SGPC has grown into a multifaceted organization. It oversees the administration of hundreds of gurdwaras, including the holiest shrines such as Sri Harmandir Sahib and Sri Akal Takht Sahib. It also runs educational institutions, hospitals, and charitable programs, and publishes religious literature. The Foundation Day of the SGPC is observed annually to remember the vision and sacrifices of those who worked to establish a unified body for the Sikh community. It serves as a reminder of the importance of collective effort in preserving the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Sikhs. The SGPC continues to be a vital institution, guiding the community in religious and social matters while upholding the principles of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the Sikh Gurus.
