Sangrand Poh

Nanakshahi: 1 Poh (16 December)

Sangrand Poh marks the beginning of the Desi month of Poh in the Sikh calendar, observed with the recitation of Barah Maha in Gurdwaras.

Historical Significance of Sangrand Poh

Sangrand Poh, the first day of the Desi month of Poh, holds a special place in Sikh history and tradition. According to the Sikh calendar, Sangrand Poh typically falls in mid-December. On this day, Sikh Gurdwaras welcome the new month with the recitation of the Bani 'Barah Maha' from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. 'Barah Maha' is a composition by Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji that describes the spiritual and natural aspects of the twelve months. In Gurbani, the month of Poh is described as a time of cold and frost, yet it is also a period of deep spiritual reflection and devotion.

The Barah Maha composition reveals the inner state of the soul through the changing seasons. For the month of Poh, Guru Arjan Dev Ji writes: 'Poh likhiya jhagre, jhagre bhaaee' – the month of Poh is recorded for disputes and conflicts, but the Guru advises to discard conflict and remember the Lord. Similarly, Guru Nanak Dev Ji describes Poh as a month when the cold wind blows and the earth is dry, but the devotee remains absorbed in the love of God. These verses remind Sikhs to remain steadfast in their faith despite external hardships.

Historically, Sangrand Poh has been observed by Sikhs as a day of renewal and commitment. It is a time when the community gathers to hear the Guru's word, reflecting on the passage of time and the importance of spiritual discipline. The recitation of Barah Maha on Sangrand is a longstanding tradition in Sikh Gurdwaras, especially in the Punjab region. It serves as a reminder of the cyclical nature of life and the eternal message of the Gurus.

Furthermore, Sangrand Poh is associated with the agricultural cycle in Punjab. The month of Poh marks the beginning of the winter harvest season, and farmers prepare for the Rabi crops. Sikhs offer prayers for a bountiful harvest and express gratitude to the Almighty. The Sangrand day is also marked by the distribution of Karah Prasad and the organization of Langar, emphasizing the principles of equality and selfless service.

In contemporary times, Sangrand Poh continues to be celebrated with great reverence. Sikhs around the world observe this day by attending Gurdwara, listening to the Barah Maha Kirtan, and participating in community service. It is a time to reflect on the teachings of the Gurus and to seek their blessings for the month ahead. The event underscores the Sikh commitment to living in harmony with nature and the divine will.

Thus, Sangrand Poh is not merely a calendar event but a spiritual occasion that connects Sikhs to their rich heritage and the timeless wisdom of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
