Conquest of Delhi by Sardar Baghel Singh Ji

Nanakshahi: 2 Chet (15 March)

The victory of the Sikh Misls over Delhi in 1783, led by Sardar Baghel Singh Ji, marking a significant triumph of the Sikh confederacy against Mughal authority.

Historical Background

In Sikh history, the struggle against the tyranny of the Mughal Empire during the time of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj is a glorious part of the community's heritage. In this chain of struggle, the name of Sardar Baghel Singh Ji is remembered with great respect. He was a devoted Sikh of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj, who sacrificed his life for the protection of the faith. He was born in the village of Baghel (Patiala region) and was known as a brave general in the army of Banda Singh Bahadur Ji.

The Delhi Campaign

After the martyrdom of Banda Singh Bahadur Ji, the Sikhs organized themselves into Misls (confederacies) to continue their resistance. By the late 18th century, the Sikh Misls had grown powerful and frequently raided the outskirts of Delhi. In 1783, a combined force of Sikh Misls, under the leadership of Sardar Baghel Singh Ji, Sardar Jassa Singh Ahluwalia Ji, and Sardar Jassa Singh Ramgarhia Ji, marched towards Delhi. The Mughal emperor, Shah Alam II, was weak and unable to resist the advancing Sikh army. The Sikhs defeated the Mughal forces and occupied the Red Fort and the city of Delhi.

The Victory and Its Significance

The conquest of Delhi in 1783 was a momentous event. It demonstrated the military prowess and determination of the Sikhs to challenge the might of the Mughal Empire. Sardar Baghel Singh Ji, with his strategic acumen, ensured that the Sikh flag flew over the Red Fort. The victory was not merely a military triumph; it was a symbolic assertion of Sikh sovereignty and the right to self-rule. The Mughal emperor was forced to negotiate, and the Sikhs imposed a tribute (chauth) on the city. This event marked the beginning of Sikh political dominance in the region and paved the way for the eventual establishment of the Sikh Empire under Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji.

Legacy

The conquest of Delhi by Sardar Baghel Singh Ji is celebrated as a day of victory for the Sikh Misls. It is a reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the Sikh warriors who fought against oppression. Sardar Baghel Singh Ji's leadership and devotion to the Guru's cause continue to inspire Sikhs worldwide. His legacy is honored in Sikh history as a symbol of resistance and triumph of righteousness over tyranny.
