The birth anniversary (Parkash Gurpurab) of Sri Guru Angad Dev Sahib Ji, the second Sikh Guru, celebrated with devotion by Sikhs worldwide.

Parkash Gurpurab of Sri Guru Angad Dev Sahib Ji

In the history of Sikhism, the Parkash Gurpurabs (birth anniversaries) of the Gurus hold a special significance. On these sacred occasions, the Sikh Sangat lovingly remembers the lives, divine hymns, and teachings of the Sri Guru Sahibans. The Parkash Gurpurab of the second Nanak, Sri Guru Angad Dev Sahib Ji, is likewise a priceless treasure for the Sikh community.

Historical Background

Sri Guru Angad Dev Sahib Ji was born on 31 March 1504 CE (some sources cite 1504, others 1504 according to the Bikrami calendar) at the home of Mata Ramo Ji and Baba Pheru Mall Ji, in the village of Matte di Sarai (now known as Sherpur), near Muktsar. His birth name was Bhai Lehna Ji. His father, Baba Pheru Mall Ji, was a prosperous trader, and his mother, Mata Ramo Ji, was a deeply pious woman. From a young age, Bhai Lehna Ji exhibited a deeply spiritual temperament, a gentle nature, and a profound love for the Divine.

Bhai Lehna Ji grew up to be a devoted son and a successful trader. He was married to Mata Khivi Ji, who is remembered in Sikh history as an epitome of selfless service (seva) and devotion. Despite his worldly success, Bhai Lehna Ji's heart yearned for spiritual fulfillment. His quest led him to many holy places and ascetics, but he found no lasting peace until he heard the kirtan (devotional singing) of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji's hymns. The moment he heard the sacred words, 'Japji Sahib', his soul was captivated, and he resolved to meet the Guru.

When Bhai Lehna Ji met Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji at Kartarpur, he was instantly transformed. He dedicated his life to the Guru's service, performing the most menial tasks with utmost love and humility. His unwavering devotion, obedience, and selfless service were tested by Guru Nanak Dev Ji in numerous ways, and Bhai Lehna Ji emerged victorious each time. His humility and steadfastness became an example for all Sikhs.

After years of devoted service, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji chose Bhai Lehna Ji as his successor, renaming him 'Angad' – meaning 'my own limb'. On 7 September 1539, Guru Nanak Dev Ji installed Bhai Lehna Ji as the second Guru, Sri Guru Angad Dev Sahib Ji. This event marked the continuation of the Guruship and the preservation of the divine light.

As Guru, Sri Guru Angad Dev Sahib Ji continued the mission of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. He collected and compiled the hymns of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, and it is believed that he invented the Gurmukhi script to make the Guru's words accessible to all. He established new centres of learning and preached the equality of all, regardless of caste or gender. He emphasized the importance of physical fitness, humility, and selfless service. His wife, Mata Khivi Ji, ran the Guru's langar (community kitchen), serving all with love and equality.

The Parkash Gurpurab of Sri Guru Angad Dev Sahib Ji is celebrated with great enthusiasm by Sikhs around the world. The day begins with an Akhand Path (continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib) or a Sahaj Path. Kirtan Darbars are held, where ragis sing the hymns of the Gurus. Katha (discourses) are delivered, highlighting the life and teachings of Guru Angad Dev Sahib Ji. Langar is served to all, and Sikhs engage in acts of charity and service. The celebration reminds Sikhs of the Guru's message of humility, devotion, and service to humanity.

Thus, the Parkash Gurpurab of Sri Guru Angad Dev Sahib Ji is not merely a commemoration of a birth, but a celebration of the Guru's eternal teachings and his pivotal role in shaping the Sikh faith. It inspires Sikhs to follow the path of Gursikhi with love and dedication.
