Jyoti Jot Diwas of Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji

In Sikh history, the Jyoti Jot Diwas holds a special place. This day is associated with the sacred memory of the merging of Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji into the Divine Light. Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji was the eighth Guru of the Sikhs, who at a very young age assumed the service of the Guruship and established a great example of spiritual life.

Historical Background

Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji was born at Sri Kiratpur Sahib. He was the son of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji. From childhood, he exhibited extraordinary spiritual wisdom and compassion. In 1661, at the age of five, he was formally installed as the eighth Guru by his father, Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji, who passed the Guruship to him before his own departure. Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji became the youngest Guru in Sikh history.

During his short Guruship, Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji devoted himself to the service of humanity. He healed the sick, comforted the suffering, and spread the message of Naam Simran and Sewa. His divine presence attracted many devotees. In 1663, he traveled to Delhi at the invitation of Raja Jai Singh. There, an epidemic of cholera and smallpox was raging. Guru Sahib Ji served the afflicted with great love and compassion, earning the title 'Bala Pir' (Child Saint).

In Delhi, Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji stayed at the residence of Raja Jai Singh. Many people came to seek his blessings. He taught that true religion consists of love for God and service to humanity. He emphasized the importance of humility, truthfulness, and remembrance of the Divine Name.

The Merging with the Divine Light

In 1664, Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji contracted smallpox while serving the sick. His condition worsened, and on the day of his passing, he called for his followers. When asked who would be the next Guru, he uttered the words 'Baba Bakale', indicating that the next Guru would be found in the village of Bakala. Soon after, on 30 March 1664, at the age of seven, Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji merged into the Divine Light (Jyoti Jot). His mortal remains were cremated at the site where Gurdwara Bala Sahib now stands in Delhi.

The Jyoti Jot Diwas is observed with deep reverence. Sikhs gather at Gurdwaras, especially at Gurdwara Bala Sahib in Delhi and Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, to offer prayers, recite Gurbani, and remember the teachings of Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji. The day reminds Sikhs of the Guru's message of selfless service, compassion, and the fleeting nature of life. It inspires them to follow the path of righteousness and devotion.

The event is commemorated annually according to the Sikh calendar. It is a time for reflection on the Guru's short but impactful life, which demonstrated that age is no barrier to spiritual greatness. Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji's legacy continues to guide Sikhs worldwide, encouraging them to serve humanity and remember God at all times.
