The sacred day commemorating the merging of the divine light of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji into Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji at Nanded Sahib in 1708.

Jyoti Jot Diwas of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji

In Sikh history, the Jyoti Jot Diwas of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji is observed with deep reverence and emotion. The Tenth Master, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji, dedicated his entire life to the service of humanity, the protection of righteousness, and the establishment of truth. His divine light merged into Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in 1708 CE at Nanded Sahib, which is why this day is known as Jyoti Jot Diwas.

Historical Background

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji was born in 1666 CE at Patna Sahib. From his early years, he displayed extraordinary spiritual wisdom and courage. He was installed as the Tenth Guru in 1675 CE after the martyrdom of his father, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji. Throughout his life, Guru Sahib fought against tyranny and oppression, always upholding the principles of justice and equality. He founded the Khalsa Panth in 1699 CE, giving the Sikhs a distinct identity and a code of conduct rooted in devotion, discipline, and service.

Guru Sahib's life was marked by immense sacrifices. He lost his father, his mother, and all four of his sons in the struggle for righteousness. Yet, he remained steadfast in his faith and never wavered in his commitment to the Almighty. His compositions, including the Jaap Sahib, Tav-Prasad Savaiye, and Chaupai Sahib, are recited by Sikhs daily and reflect his profound spiritual realization.

The Final Days at Nanded Sahib

In 1708 CE, Guru Sahib arrived at Nanded, in present-day Maharashtra, at the invitation of a local devotee. It was here that he met Madho Das, a recluse who later became known as Banda Singh Bahadur after receiving Guru Sahib's blessings and instructions to fight against injustice. During his stay, Guru Sahib continued to spread the message of the Khalsa and initiated many into the fold.

On October 7, 1708, Guru Sahib's divine light merged into Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Before his departure, he declared that the Guru Granth Sahib would be the eternal Guru for the Sikhs, and that the Khalsa would remain under its guidance. This momentous event marked the end of the line of human Gurus and the beginning of the Guru Granth Sahib as the perpetual spiritual authority.

Significance and Observance

Jyoti Jot Diwas is observed with great devotion at Nanded Sahib, now known as Takht Sri Hazur Sahib, one of the five temporal seats of Sikh authority. Sikhs from around the world gather to participate in Akhand Path, Kirtan, and prayers. The day reminds Sikhs of Guru Sahib's unparalleled sacrifices and his timeless message of unity, courage, and devotion.

The observance also emphasizes the importance of the Guru Granth Sahib as the living Guru, guiding Sikhs in all aspects of life. It is a day to reflect on Guru Sahib's teachings and to renew one's commitment to the principles of the Khalsa.

In conclusion, Jyoti Jot Diwas of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji is a solemn yet inspiring occasion that honors the life and legacy of the Tenth Master. It serves as a reminder of his eternal presence through the Guru Granth Sahib and his enduring message of righteousness and love for humanity.
