Birth Anniversary of Sahibzada Baba Jujhar Singh Ji

The birth anniversary of Sahibzada Baba Jujhar Singh Ji holds an indelible place of honour in Sikh history. He was the second of the four blessed sons of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji and Mata Jito Ji. According to Sikh historical tradition, his holy manifestation (Prakash) took place at Sri Anandpur Sahib in the year 1691 CE. He was named 'Jujhar,' meaning 'warrior' or 'fighter,' a name that foreshadowed the extraordinary valour and sacrifice that would define his short but glorious life.

From his earliest years, Sahibzada Baba Jujhar Singh Ji was raised in an environment steeped in spiritual devotion and martial discipline. Under the loving guidance of his revered father, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji, and the care of his mother, Mata Jito Ji, he received instruction in both the sacred scriptures and the art of warfare. He learned to ride horses, wield weapons, and uphold the noble code of the Khalsa. Alongside his elder brother, Sahibzada Baba Ajit Singh Ji, and his younger brothers, Sahibzada Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Sahibzada Baba Fateh Singh Ji, he grew up imbued with the spirit of selfless service and unwavering faith.

The turbulent times of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries demanded great sacrifice from the Sikh community. The hill chiefs and the Mughal authorities repeatedly besieged Sri Anandpur Sahib, forcing Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji and his followers to endure severe hardships. In the face of these trials, Sahibzada Baba Jujhar Singh Ji displayed remarkable courage and steadfastness, remaining ever devoted to his father and the Khalsa Panth.

In December 1704, after the evacuation of Sri Anandpur Sahib, the Guru's family was separated near the Sirsa river. While Mata Gujri Ji and the younger Sahibzadas were taken by Gangu, Sahibzada Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Sahibzada Baba Jujhar Singh Ji accompanied their father and a small band of Sikhs to Chamkaur Sahib. There, in the historic battle of Chamkaur, on 7 December 1704, Sahibzada Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, though only about thirteen years old, sought permission from his father to enter the battlefield. Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji, beholding his son's fearless spirit, blessed him and sent him forth. Sahibzada Baba Jujhar Singh Ji fought valiantly against overwhelming Mughal forces and attained martyrdom, embracing the highest sacrifice for the sake of righteousness and the Khalsa.

The birth anniversary of Sahibzada Baba Jujhar Singh Ji is observed with deep reverence by the Sikh community.
