Gurgaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji commemorates the day in 1708 when Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji installed Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the eternal Guru of the Sikhs.

Gurgaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

In Sikh history, the Gurgaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji holds a most sacred and significant place. This event took place in 1708 CE at Nanded (Maharashtra), when Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji, shortly before his physical departure, installed Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the eternal Guru. With this decision, the line of human Gurus came to an end, and the Sikh community received a guiding light that would forever illuminate their path.

Historical Background

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, had devoted his life to upholding righteousness and protecting the oppressed. In his final days at Nanded, he gathered the Sikhs and, in their presence, bestowed the Guruship upon the sacred scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. This act was not merely a succession but a profound spiritual testament. The Guru declared that the Word (Shabad) would henceforth be the Guru, and the Sikhs were to seek guidance from the scripture alone.

The ceremony was marked by deep reverence. Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji placed a copy of the Adi Granth before the congregation, offered a coin and a coconut as symbols of respect, and bowed before it. He then addressed the Sikhs, instructing them to regard Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as their living Guru. This momentous occasion is celebrated annually as Gurgaddi Diwas, usually falling in the month of Katak (October-November), though the exact date varies according to the Nanakshahi calendar.

Significance

The installation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the eternal Guru was a revolutionary step. It ensured that the Sikh faith would remain free from the limitations of a physical lineage, and that the teachings of all ten Gurus, along with those of various Bhagats and Bhatts, would be preserved in their original form. The Guru Granth Sahib Ji is not merely a book; it is the living embodiment of the Guru's wisdom, and Sikhs show it the same respect as they would a living Guru.

This event also reinforced the core Sikh principles of equality, justice, and devotion to the One Creator. The scripture contains hymns that emphasize meditation on the Divine Name, honest living, and sharing with others. By elevating the scripture to the status of Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji ensured that the Sikh community would always have a perfect guide, accessible to all without any intermediary.

Observance

On Gurgaddi Diwas, Sikhs around the world gather in Gurdwaras for special prayers, kirtan, and readings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The day is marked by processions, community meals (langar), and acts of charity. It is a time for reflection on the Guru's teachings and a renewal of one's commitment to the Sikh way of life. The celebration reminds Sikhs of their responsibility to live according to the Guru's word and to uphold the values of truth, compassion, and service.

Thus, the Gurgaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is not just a historical commemoration but a living celebration of the eternal Guru's presence in the Sikh faith. It stands as a testament to the foresight of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji and the enduring power of the Shabad Guru.
