Gurgaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji commemorates the day when Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji was installed as the eighth Guru of the Sikhs.

Historical Background

Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji is the eighth Guru of the Sikh religion. He was born in 1656 CE at Kiratpur Sahib in the home of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji and Mata Krishan Kaur Ji. From childhood, Baba Har Krishan Ji displayed qualities of spiritual wisdom, purity, and service to humanity. After Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji merged into the Divine Light, the Sikh congregations accepted Baba Har Krishan Ji as the eighth Guru Sahib. This sacred day is known in Sikh history as 'Gurgaddi Diwas'.

The Gurgaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji is observed with deep reverence and devotion by Sikhs around the world. It marks the formal assumption of the spiritual leadership of the Sikh Panth by the young Guru, who was only about five years old at the time. Despite his tender age, Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji exhibited extraordinary spiritual insight, compassion, and fearlessness. His accession to the Guruship was not merely a succession but a divine appointment that reaffirmed the continuity of the Guru's light.

Historical accounts describe that when Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji was asked about his successor, he indicated that the next Guru would be his younger son, Har Krishan. Following the passing of Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji in 1661 CE, the Sikhs, including prominent leaders and the sangat, gathered and honored Baba Har Krishan Ji as the eighth Guru. The ceremony of Gurgaddi, though simple in form, carried profound spiritual significance. It symbolized the unbroken chain of divine guidance from Guru Nanak Sahib Ji through the successive Gurus.

During his short but impactful Guruship, Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji traveled to Delhi, where he served the sick and suffering during a severe epidemic. His healing touch and selfless service became legendary, and many were drawn to his divine presence. He emphasized the core Sikh teachings of Naam Simran, Kirat Karni, and Vand Chhakna—meditation on the Divine Name, honest labor, and sharing with others. His life, though brief, left an indelible mark on Sikh history and spirituality.

The Gurgaddi Diwas is celebrated with Akhand Paths, kirtan, and community gatherings. Sikhs reflect on the Guru's message of humility, service, and devotion. It is a time to renew one's commitment to the Guru's teachings and to imbibe the virtues that Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji embodied. The day also reminds the Sikh community of the importance of spiritual succession and the eternal presence of the Guru's wisdom.

In commemorating this event, Sikhs honor the legacy of Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji, who, despite his young age, demonstrated that spiritual greatness is not measured by years but by one's connection to the Divine and service to humanity. His Gurgaddi Diwas inspires devotees to walk on the path of righteousness and to serve all with love and compassion.
