Birth Anniversary of Bhai Taru Singh Ji

In Sikh history, the name of Bhai Taru Singh Ji is remembered with deep respect and reverence. He was a great Gursikh and immortal martyr of the time of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Sahib. His birth anniversary is a symbol of devotion, sacrifice, and humility for the Sikh community. The life of Bhai Taru Singh Ji teaches us that bowing one's head before the Guru's command and sacrificing everything for the principles of Sikhi is true Gursikhi.

Historical Background

Bhai Taru Singh Ji was born in the Majha region of Punjab, in the village of Puhla, near Amritsar. From a young age, he was deeply devoted to the Sikh faith and the teachings of the Gurus. He was a simple, hardworking farmer who lived with his mother and sister. His life was marked by humility, service, and an unshakable love for the Guru.

During the time of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Sahib, the Sikhs faced severe persecution under the Mughal authorities and their local governors. Despite these challenges, Bhai Taru Singh Ji remained steadfast in his faith. He would regularly visit Amritsar to have darshan of Sri Harmandir Sahib and to serve the Sikh community. He provided food and shelter to Sikhs who were being hunted by the Mughal forces, considering it his sacred duty.

His devotion and service did not go unnoticed. The local Mughal officials, led by Zakariya Khan, the governor of Lahore, sought to crush the spirit of the Sikhs. Bhai Taru Singh Ji was arrested and brought before the governor. He was offered wealth, land, and a high position if he would convert to Islam. With calm courage, he refused, saying that he would never forsake his Guru or his faith.

The governor then ordered that his hair, the sacred kesh of a Sikh, be cut off, hoping to break his spirit. Bhai Taru Singh Ji remained unmoved. He said that his hair was a gift from the Guru and that he would rather give up his life than part with it. The Mughal authorities then ordered that his scalp be removed. Even in the face of such brutal torture, Bhai Taru Singh Ji did not waver. He accepted the pain with the remembrance of the Guru on his lips.

It is said that after his scalp was removed, Bhai Taru Singh Ji remained conscious and continued to recite Gurbani. He attained martyrdom on the 1st of Harh, 1782 Bikrami (July 1745), at Lahore. His sacrifice became a shining example of unwavering faith and courage for generations of Sikhs.

The birth anniversary of Bhai Taru Singh Ji is observed with great devotion by Sikhs around the world. On this day, Sikhs gather in Gurdwaras to recite Gurbani, sing kirtan, and remember his supreme sacrifice. The day serves as a reminder of the values of humility, service, and steadfastness in the face of oppression. It inspires Sikhs to live according to the teachings of the Guru and to stand up for justice and truth.
