Bandi Chhor Divas (Diwali)

Nanakshahi: 23 Kattak (8 November)

Bandi Chhor Divas (Diwali) commemorates the release of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji from Gwalior Fort, symbolizing freedom, compassion, and the Sikh spirit of service to humanity.

Bandi Chhor Divas (Diwali) — A Radiant Day in Sikh History

Bandi Chhor Divas holds a special place in Sikh history. This day symbolizes the great compassion, fearlessness, and service to humanity of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. In 1619 CE, Guru Sahib Ji was imprisoned in the fort of Gwalior by the order of the Mughal emperor Jahangir. There, Guru Sahib Ji spent a long period with great patience and contentment. Even during this imprisonment, Guru Sahib Ji never lost courage while following the principles of Sikhism, nor did he hold any enmity toward anyone.

While in Gwalior Fort, Guru Sahib Ji came to know that many innocent princes and rulers were also imprisoned there, suffering greatly. Moved by compassion, Guru Sahib Ji refused to leave the fort alone. He insisted that the other imprisoned princes be released as well. The emperor agreed, but with a condition: only those prisoners who could hold onto the Guru's cloak would be freed. Guru Sahib Ji had a special cloak made with fifty-two tassels. As he walked out of the fort, all fifty-two princes held onto the tassels and were released along with him. Because of this, Guru Sahib Ji is lovingly remembered as 'Bandi Chhor' — the Liberator of the imprisoned.

When Guru Sahib Ji returned to Amritsar, the Sikhs were overjoyed. The city was illuminated with lamps and candles to welcome him. This celebration coincided with the festival of Diwali, and since then, Sikhs have celebrated Bandi Chhor Divas on this day. The day is marked by lighting lamps at the Golden Temple and other Gurdwaras, reciting Gurbani, and reflecting on the values of freedom, justice, and compassion.

Bandi Chhor Divas is not merely a historical commemoration; it is a reminder of the Sikh commitment to standing against oppression and securing the freedom of all. Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji's act of refusing to leave without the other prisoners teaches selflessness and solidarity. The illumination of lamps signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.

On this day, Sikhs gather in Gurdwaras, listen to kirtan, and share langar. Many also light candles at their homes and distribute sweets. The message of Bandi Chhor Divas is universal: true freedom is when everyone is free, and true compassion is when we care for the suffering of others. Guru Sahib Ji's life and this event continue to inspire Sikhs to live with courage, dignity, and love for all humanity.
